Cycling

The development of a cycle network running though Kirkby is slowly progressing, but whilst the routes running through the town are largely complete, routes running around the town are limited and sometimes disjointed

There is one National Cycle Network route which runs through Kirkby: route 863 from Stockbridge Village to Kirkby Train Station (blue on map).

There are also other cycle routes in Kirkby that are not officially included as part of the National Cycle Network which are nevertheless designated cycle routes (green on map). Some of these are captured on the Knowsley Council webpage on cycling which includes a route map from 2017. They include through routes along:

  • East Lancashire Road
  • Moorgate Road
  • South Boundary Road
  • County Road
  • Bank Lane
  • Valley Road

There are six branches from these through-routes on:

  • Arbor Lane and Eddie McArdle Playing Fields link path
  • Bewley Drive and Bracknell Avenue providing access to Kirkby High School and Activate
  • Broad Lane providing access to Park Brow school
  • Mill Lane and Glovers Brow providing access to Mill Dam Park
  • Old Rough Lane providing access to Old Rough Park
  • Shevington’s Lane leading to Moorfields shops

There also also fragments of cycle paths running through Northwood on Roughwood Drive, Quarryside Drive, and a completely isolated fragment on North Perimeter Road a link path to Kirkby Industrial Estate.

In addition to designated cycle routes, there are some other routes suitable for on path cycling (orange on map), such as through Millbrook Park Millennium Green, a link to Croxteth Park and along the River Alt.

Pedal Away is the Merseyside-based initiative of the national charity Cycling Projects.
