Election of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Merseyside Police
The Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for ensuring the effective operation of Merseyside Police. The current Merseyside PCC is Emily Spurrell, who was elected during the 2021 PCC election for a term of 4 years. The 2021 election was due to take place on 7th May 2020 alongside the Knowsley Local Council and Liverpool City Region Mayor elections, however this was delayed until 6th May 2021 due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
The first PCC elections took place in 2012 following a change in legislation, with the Merseyside PCC replacing the unelected Merseyside Police Authority. The change to electing PCCs has been controversial due to the very low voter turnout at the 2012 election: in Merseyside this was just 12.44%.
PCC elections take place every 4 years, with the next Merseyside PCC election taking place in 2025. Unlike in Manchester, it is not planned for the Liverpool City Region Mayor to take over the responsibilities of the Merseyside PCC, presumably because the city region includes Halton Borough Council which is not covered by Merseyside Police.
